About Jorge Gameiro

Based in Portugal, I currently co-ordinate around sixty people with a range of skills: mould and model makers, costumiers, metal and woodworkers, fibreglass, foam and rubber specialists, electrical, electronic, software and mechanical engineers.

My background was first as a puppet maker, exporting to the giftware market, from Portugal to five countries. In the 80s I married an English sculptor and went to live in the U.K. Here I started my career with animatronics and special effects. I wanted to combine new technologies with traditional Portuguese craftsmanship, in order to establish Portugal as a new centre of entertainment industry. Like this I could see a way to providing high quality packages of products for museums and special events, at very competitive prices.

I can supply animatronics operated through motors or pneumatics.  They can be programmed or animated in real time, for voice and for movement.  They could be activated by PLC, sensor or joystick and microphone for real time animation. The software for controlling light, sound, special effects etc, is as user friendly for large and complex spaces as it is for small displays.  Sculpture, moulds, sets and props in various materials can be produced to order.  Fibreglass, rubber or foam can be crafted or industrially produced.  Robotic systems for snow, smoke and bubble machines activate, rotate and feed liquid automatically.  These components can be ordered to create, at very reasonable cost, an entire package or as individual items.

Now, a few years further down the line, I am finding I can produce every aspect of my work, to the high quality specifications I require, in Portugal. I have joined IAAPA and this year I am taking part in the euro attraction show, as a way of launching this project on an international stage.
